LIVERPOOL ISRAEL SUPPORT TEAM

Imagine day after day, night after night, month after month, for years, a relentless bombardment of rockets from your neighbours. Imagine the terror whole communities are subjected to, imagine explaining to your children that it is dangerous to play outdoors, that they have to stay close to the bomb shelter at all times.

Israel launched a military operation to stop Hamas firing rockets into homes, schools and kindergartens.   The International press, who have not reported years of rocket fire on Israeli civilians, highlighted the Palestinian perspective – ‘Gaza in crisis’; there were few if any media reports of the ‘Sderot Crisis’ or of the fact the Hamas uses Palestinian children as human shields.   There is little attempt at understanding Israel’s need to defend the lives of its own people.   Which country in the world – except Israel- is expected to live under these conditions?   Why is Israel held to double standards? Why do people worldwide consider this daily threat an acceptable way of living for Israelis?

We are, without doubt, experiencing an increase in anti Israel sentiment.

We must not; we dare not ignore the signs.

Even here in Liverpool, anti Israel feelings within our community are more apparent. The absence of a fair and balanced presentation by the media in this country has influenced the average person’s views leaving them vulnerable to pro-Palestinian propaganda and misinformation.

Pro-Palestinian activists are ACTIVE. We too must be seen and heard.

With the full support of the Israeli Embassy, the Zionist Federation and the Jewish Agency and the backing of the Merseyside Jewish Representative Council, LIST (Liverpool Israel Support Team) has been formed to promote such action.

We are working hard to ensure that Israel’s case is well represented in Liverpool, that we give an answer to anti-Israel publications and events and that a balance is achieved in the press and public arena.

We recognise the diversity within the Jewish Community and acknowledge we cannot speak as the sole voice of the community.

Our work involves:

·         Media response – Defending Israel in the media.

·         Liaising with organisations to educate and inform people in the community and beyond of the many positive things about Israel.

·         Being proactive when necessary – taking a stand.

·         Inspiring community members to start acting now and defend the only Jewish country in the world.

·         Reinforcing Israel’s position as an integral part of our community.

·         Offer support, advice and resources to any individual wishing to get actively involved in defending Israel.
